Three short reads for the questions people ask before a first order: what a gel actually does, which line fits the effort, and whether to go caffeinated.

Gel 101
What a gel does, and why 45 minutes matters.
Your body stores enough carbohydrate for short or easy sessions. Work hard or go past about 45 minutes and that store runs down. A gel puts 100 kcal of easy-to-digest carbohydrate back in, one every 20–30 minutes, without asking your stomach to deal with solid food.

Roctane vs Original
Everyday gel, or the long hard day?
Original is the gel for daily training and steady efforts. Roctane carries up to 3× the sodium and 3× the branched-chain amino acids, plus taurine and beta-alanine, for longer or higher-intensity efforts, races, and hot or demanding conditions. Many athletes train on Original and keep Roctane for race day.

Caffeinated vs non-caffeinated
Do you want caffeine in it?
Caffeine sharpens focus and makes a hard effort feel easier, but it does not replace carbohydrate. Caffeinated flavours carry 20–40 mg in Original and Liquid and 35–70 mg in Roctane. Many athletes go without early on and add it later in a long effort; the non-caffeinated flavours suit evening sessions and sensitive stomachs. Every flavour is clearly marked.

Work out the plan first: one gel every 20–30 minutes once you pass the first hour, with a few sips of water each time. The calculator turns your activity, duration and the weather into a gel count.
